Alfalfa is a deep-rooted perennial legume considered the "queen of forage crops" for its high protein content and yield. It fixes 150-250 lb of nitrogen per acre annually and can produce 3-6 cuttings per year in favorable climates. Alfalfa requires well-drained soils with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and does not tolerate standing water. It establishes slowly but persists for 4-8 years once established. Inoculation with Rhizobium bacteria is essential. Plant in spring or late summer into a firm, weed-free seedbed.
