Wild rice (Zizania palustris) is an aquatic annual grass native to North America that thrives in shallow, slow-moving water or wetland areas. It requires water 6-18 inches deep and a soft, muddy bottom. Seeds must be kept moist and cold-stratified before spring planting, or sown in fall after migration to allow natural cold stratification. It is a re-seeding annual that will replenish itself each fall once established. Wild rice provides exceptional waterfowl habitat and high-energy grain for ducks, geese, and other wetland birds.
